DURANGO EQUINE THERAPY: EQUINE THERAPY PROGRAMS

When you participate in a therapy program using horses, you have an opportunity to know yourself through the reflection of an honest, sensitive being who can give you immediate non-judgmental feedback.

Because horses are primarily relational they can help you become more authentic, more confident within yourself and they can help you deepen your relationships. They also have an intuitive and loving presence and often help people heal from grief, trauma and depression.

There are three ways to participate with Durango Equine Therapy:

  1. Ongoing equine assisted therapy sessions weekly or biweekly.
  2. Private intensive retreats for 1, 2, or 3 days.
  3. A 3-day group equine workshop for helping professionals designed specifically to help deepen your relationship with your clients, prevent burnout and refresh yourself as a helper (CEUs will eventually be offered). All programs are held at Kate’s small ranch outside of Durango, CO.

For specific details, call Kate at 970-259-3424 or email.

  1. EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY

"Would you like to hang out in the corral?" Kate asked. 'I would,' I answered. There, in the accumulated dust of my 62 years, feeling lost and damaged with tears leaving dirty tracks down my cheeks, the "wise old man" of the herd strolled casually toward me and, quite literally, placed his soft nose against my heart. In that moment I was no longer broken, but broken open—ready to begin the journey that would lead me home through therapy with horses! Who knew?" LS, Retired school teacher

Private Equine assisted therapy retreats originated when my clients from around the country began to ask if they could come to Colorado in the summer and work with me, and my horses. Thus began a tradition of creating a sacred space for people to heal and grow using horses as therapist. My role became one of facilitating the deepening relationship work between clients and horses.

How does an Equine assisted therapy retreat work?

We’ll discuss your goals ahead of time. Do you want to solve a problem? Do you need a quiet place to learn about yourself? Are you recovering from a trauma? Do you need to discover more about who you are in relationship?

Depending on your intentions, we may use movement, meditation, journaling, or guided imagery in addition to being with the horses. We meet 4 hours a day with an additional hour for lunch, integration and rest. Your responsibilities are your accommodations, transportation, and additional meals.

Kate Feldman and Toni Herbine-Blank (and friends) share a herd of horses. Several years ago they created ACCESSING PRESENCE, an equine assisted therapy retreat for therapists and other helping professionals to deepen their contact with their clients, prevent burnout, and improve their clinical work. The retreat has sold out each year within two weeks of sending out the brochure.

ACCESSING PRESENCE is an experiential retreat born out of the principles of equine therapy programs.

Imagine three warm, sun-drenched days in Colorado, a small group of professionals, and a herd of horses. You relax. You learn about yourself. You breathe fresh air scented with ponderosa pine and horse. You access a place inside that you have always known is there and have perhaps forgotten.

The purpose of this retreat is to support helping professionals increase their capacity to be SELF PRESENT in their work with clients. Self-Presence is about being simultaneously open hearted and accepting of oneself as well as the client, attuned to ones own inner rhythm and the rhythm of the client.

Retreats are held at a small ranch outside Durango Colorado in July and October.

During this experiential retreat you will partner with horses to deepen your awareness of relationship in the present moment. Through guided, hands-on-experiences of grooming, touching, moving, breathing, and interacting with horses, you’ll explore the dynamics of contact with yourself, others and the environment.

Through your relationship with the horses, you will discover:

  • Deepened and more relaxed ways to be with your clients,
  • How to prevent burnout, and
  • An increased ability to facilitate healing and awareness in your work.

The retreat does not include actual horseback riding. We focus on contact, connection and building relationship with the horses. Everyone has a different experience and learns different things about themselves.

Our intention is to facilitate an environment that is nourishing and transformational for you as a helping professional. We understand that our work in the world is demanding and calls forth the deepest parts of ourselves. We all need time to go inward and connect with ourselves.

Please note: Our July Equine programs are limited to mental health professionals (coaches, counselors, social workers, psychologists); the October program is open to all helping professionals including doctors, nurses, body workers, lawyers.

We are working on being able to provide CEUS.
